-Basic Emergency Needs, food, shelter, water in case of a disaster...I'm interested becauase I hear about how badly natural disasters and terrorism have effected commnities all over the world and the country, and because I think that especially flood readiness and storm readiness is a must for the saint louis area, and the publics techniques and strategies need to be reviewed and if nessecary, revamped.
- Car Theft/Armed Larceny at public places in Saint Louis. Saint Louis has a legacy of car theft, having had the very first car theft in 1903, however, it makes me feel unsafe to leave my car in a public area such as the mall, and makes me feel the need to find an option for security in saint louis
.
-Meth Labs in The Saint louis area/ Jefferson county...how can they be stopped, they are a toxic waste hazards, flammable, explosive, and supply one of the most lethal and horrifying drugs in the nation. AND its taking place right in my backyard in jefferson count.

Maus Seminar Response 1
My closing thoughts on this seminar are that Art Speilberg wrote this book in comic form in order to disturb the audience, and hammer his point on inhumanity/violence into the brains of the audience.

Sovereignty Free Write
1. I noticed that my thinking changed when discussing terrorists, and the harboring of them. Initially I thought that it was the countries write to harbor terrorists, but after realizing (reminding myself) that terrorists are ideological, and that the country harboring them might be holding the same ideology, or even the terrorism highly, as well as the fact that terrorists are a national security threat really swung my views.

Congo News
http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/10/01/congo.atrocities.un.report/index.html?iref=allsearch
The congo has been in a state of war for 15 years after the rwandan genocide involving the hutus and tootsies. This article summarizes the fact that the U.N atrocities/human rights report, recently released in september has shown that over 21 militant groups have implemented rape, and murder of innocent civilians into their tactics, and that the war is no way slowing down.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-11108589
This article is a summary of the events leading up to the state that the congo is in now, as well as a brief commentary on the recent U.N human rights report. The article states that the congo, being rich in natural resources, and humans has been foughtover and abused by various rebel or government militant groups since the days of king leopold. Rebels and corporations that gain control of the resources are exporting them and mining them with little benefit to the congolese people, and at the cost of what the U.N says are genocidally proportional death tolls.

Awnsering Questions About Africa
Was it a good decision for Stanley to explore with men who had no experience as travelers? Why or why not?
-
To what extent were Leopold and Stanley similar?
Stanley and Leopold were similar in several respects. First they both had a vested interest in the African continent, and exploring it for different but aligned reasons (Stanley wanted to chart rivers and routes, while leopold wanted the land and resources that came with that). Another way they were aligned was in their views on violence, and its relation to the african people, for they both, however discreetly, used violence openly to attain their will. One example of stanleys open expeditionary vilolence can be seen on page 49 of hochschild, where they discuss the fact that stanleys expedition probably openly killed hundreds of people.
